Biowaste collection
Our company is committed to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable development. One of the main areas in which it operates is the management of biowaste.
The management of biowaste in Greece is governed by a modern regulatory framework, which includes Law 4819/2021. Under this law, the universal separate collection of biowaste is mandatory, so that it can be recycled (including composting and anaerobic digestion) in a way that ensures a high level of environmental protection and that the resulting product meets the relevant high-quality standards.
The development of the brown bin network for the separate collection of biowaste is a key obligation of municipalities under the applicable legal framework.
Our company undertakes the collection and transport of biowaste using its own specialized vehicles, which comply with all environmental and sanitary specifications. The separate collection of biowaste is carried out in the following ways:
• Door-to-door collection from each household or residence, as well as from a network of food service establishments
• Collection in separate bins placed in a dense network near households/residences
Door-to-door collection systems are recommended, as it has been proven that they are the only systems capable of ensuring sufficient collection rates with the required quality (contamination levels below 2%).
Our company also has suitable equipment for recording the quantity of biowaste produced, enabling citizens or businesses to benefit from the “Pay As You Throw” system.
Biowaste includes:
- Fruits and vegetables (including peels and stems)
- Meat and fish scraps
- Food leftovers (including cooked foods)
- Eggshells
- Dairy products such as cheese, cream, and yogurt
- Sawdust from untreated wood
- Paper grocery bags, newspapers, and used kitchen paper towels
- Coffee grounds and tea leaves (including their filters)
- Bread, pasta, rice, legumes, flour, and cereals
- Small quantities of leaves, branches, and grass from gardens and pots
Through the separate collection and processing of biowaste, the following are achieved:
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Conservation of landfill space and mitigation of related management issues
- Production of high-quality organic fertilizer/soil improver
- Production of biogas for green electricity and biomethane
- Reduction of pollution and protection of public health
- Conservation of energy and natural resources
- Reduction of soil improvers and fertilizers used within urban areas
- Creation of new jobs in environmentally positive sectors
- Strengthening of volunteerism and active citizen participation in improving the environment and living conditions in their area
Our company is dedicated to providing integrated solutions for biowaste management, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
